I'm running MacOS Monterey. Several times in the last few weeks, I've noticed the orange dot indicating the microphone is being used by an app, and I click on the Control Center and see that Zoom is accessing the microphone. I'm not in a meeting and simply have the Zoom app open. Why would Zoom be accessing the microphone when I'm not in a meeting? Go to Solution. I just updated to MacOS Monterey and now see the same orange dot indicator with zoom listed. Well, that most recent update seems to have made no obvious difference. I've just noticed the orange dot again, and when I quit Zoom, Timing. At this point, it looks like it's safest to only run Zoom while on active calls and keep it quit otherwise. The update didn't fix the issue for me. Mac thinks that as long as zoom requires microphone, I'm in a meeting. But I'm in a phone call on my iPhone. I'm also having this same problem, i noticed it about two months ago and its not changed. The only way around it is to quit the app after you get off the call and reopen it. The dot will go away after it has been newly opened. So Zoom can spy on you and sell your voice data. Zoom is a shady company and never cared about privacy. Because as soon as you launch, Zoom has to assess the ambience audio and has to prepare sufficient model for noice cancellation profile.

By the time you must have observed that Zoom has better noice cancelling AI model than Google or MS team, because of such heavy-lifting. Also it would allow you to test the computer audio, these things would require microphone. I wouldn't be worried about Zoom uses my microphone, I will be actually be concerned if the audio is saved and transmitted over internet, which is not the case here. This explanation makes sense but it overlook other less obvious issues. When an app is compromise, it inherits its permissions all its access , and zoom app has many time been shown to be poorly protected.

Having the microphone on at all time is also harmful as you won't be able to know if someone is actively listening anymore, you'll always suspect "that's probably the zoom app".

I am running on the latest version of Zoom and Mac Monterey and I am not experiencing this issue. Please check your settings. Hi Brandon, if you join a zoom meeting and finish it, then leave zoom open and walk away from the computer let it go into screen saver when you come back you can see the microphone got turned on and stays that way consistently.

I am afraid that this has been resolved with the latest version of the software. Please update and try again. I just tested it. There's no mention of that fix in the 5. I am happy to read that you are actively working on fixing this issue.

Unfortunately, I just updated to version 5. I also confirmed that Zoom is not running in Activity Monitor. Updating my post - while updating to 5. I imagine the last issue I saw was a lingering problem from the previous version. In other words, updating to 5.

Check the audio source in Zoom: If you're in a call and no one can hear you, you can click on the up arrow to expand the audio button in the Zoom app. You'll then see the options available on your computer so you can use the correct microphone. Check the audio settings in Zoom: Similar to above, if you're not in a meeting you can open Zoom, open the settings and head to "audio". Here you'll have the option to set your preferences as well as test the microphone and speaker on your PC to see if it's working.

If your mic is too quiet, you can turn up the levels here. My Mac can't access the mic: Sometimes your Mac might say it can't access the microphone and ask you to restart. This might then ask for admin permission. Entering your details can then correct the mic fault without having to restart. Ensure your PC audio settings are correct: If you've not been able to fix the problem through Zoom itself, then check your settings or preferences on your computer.

Above everything else, check they actually work to help isolate the problem. Background noise is disrupting the call: If there's too much noise around you - people in the house, traffic noise, animals, aircraft, then consider using a noise cancelation app like Krisp. This can cut the background noise so you come across sounding clearer. It can also cut background noise from others on the call, so you don't hear their noise either.

Zoom has its own background noise filter too, which you can find in settings. Otherwise the only sound people will get is that coming through your mic.

This option is in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen share options. There are echos or feedback on the audio: This usually happens when a mic detects audio coming from the speakers. It might be that the microphone is too close to the speakers, it might be that someone is using a phone and computer or that multiple computers are too close together.

Muting the mic can resolve the problem or identify which participant s are causing the problems. No one can see me: If you can't be seen - and can't see yourself - start by checking you've started video on the call.

Press the button in the bottom left-hand corner to make sure you've joined video on the call. Most calls start with video off. Zoombombing can still happen, though. An easy and obvious step is to not share your Zoom meeting details with anyone you don't want to join. For more advice, here are tips to secure your Zoom calls. If the meeting host is on the free version of Zoom, meetings are limited to 40 minutes maximum. When the time limit is nearing, a warning message will display, after which the meeting will end.

Of course, you can stop this by signing up to Zoom's paid tiers. However, the easiest way is to simply create another meeting. There's no limit to the number of meetings you can host, so send out a fresh invite and get another 40 minutes. One of the most annoying problems with video conferences is when the audio echoes or when you can hear background noise.

Echoing audio usually occurs because someone has their microphone too close to their speakers. Alternatively, it might be that multiple people have joined the call from the same room. If you're the person at fault, consider buying a home office headset so that your audio and microphone is contained to a single device. Whatever the situation, the best way to overcome this is for everyone to mute their microphone when not speaking. An important part of many Zoom calls is being able to see the other participants on their webcam.
